Hope folks won't mind playing along...I know we have often mentioned it, but how about putting it all together here? IE, list "your" tour dates, and the era you prefer (if you have one). Thought with all the discussions of such issues, it would be interested to see, in simple form, how each of us compare in this interesting biz, esp with so many newcomers of late (it would also be esp interesting to see how many saw shows prior to 77 or so, I think):

WT:

Tour dates: 74-82 (ie, yrs I attended shows)
Era of pref: 65-71 (ie, what I listen to most)

I was too young to have seen them; I was only 6 when Jerry died.

98% of my listening is from 68-77. I devote approximately equal amounts of time to years from this span.

1970, I guess, has to be my favorite year, but that's not to say it's the "best" year. 1973 and 1974 are so unbelievably rich and jazzy, 68 so raw, etc. I couldn't just pick one.

First show: 6/10/73 - Dad took me. Don't remember much except it was hotter than shit and there were a zillion people there. And some spinny chick screeching on stage.

Tour Dates: '75-'79 - Philly, Baltimore, Passaic, Landover.
Handful of shows at Saratoga Springs and Knickerbocker when I was stationed in upstate New York in '84, '89-'90

Preferred Dates: '68-'72, '77

Last show: 12/19/94. But you all have already heard this story....

It must be obvious from my posts -
But I never saw the Dead; would not have been interested at the time.
Favorite era: the early one, of course! '67 is my favorite year for the Dead...

And, Tell - I'd rather you didn't "bump" this thread later, since it's a long one, unless you really feel latecomers will be missing out. I for one, have a big post coming up tomorrow, that I wish wouldn't get bumped to the bottom right away....

Request noted, and I am happy to comply--besides, it'll be around for a few days regardless!

But, thanks so much for letting us know about your history with the band's live shows--I would never have guessed that!

Given the amazing amt you have contributed here...even more significantly, your experience puts the lie to the notion that seeing the DEAD is in any way a requirement of becoming perhaps the most astute and outstanding critic/commentator on their material...

Not "seeing" the band removes layer upon layer of subjectivity. Best show--I was there, of course. That's a standard reply for many.

But LiA brings a fresh, objective point of view into the mix--as well as a scholar's knowledge and research.

First show - Greensboro 83'

Main touring days - 84'- 85', The honeymoon was over by the time Jerry had his coma and the scene started getting too big. Didn't stop me from seeing a bunch more though.

Last show - Atlanta 95' (very sad)

Preferred listening - 83-85, then 75,76, nothing after Brent.

GD: everything, esp. '72 - '74 [when just Billy was on the kit] and spring/summer of '76
Jerry Bands: all of it
Hunter solo: 1990 and 1997 are wonder-full

Tour Dates: A few from 1970-1978. I moved from the mainland and they never played near me again.

Era of preference: 1966-1972, the Pigpen years. Pigpen's death changed the band for both good and bad.

I love listening to shows from '73 on, of course. I saw some of them, but the eighties and nineties are alien to me. I never got to see the band during that time. (I did see Jerry's band play here in 1990 though).

The eighties and nineties shows sure sound like a great party though! You Heads going to see the shows kept everything going and interesting (at least) for many years! I missed out on all that.
As for me, my main focus and love that attracted me to The Grateful Dead has always been for the music that continues to surprise, delight, and inspire me after forty years of listening! I traded/collected tapes for many years. The magic of the "Internet Archive Grateful Dead" has made a dream come true. Being able to summon up nearly any show to stream or download on command is "all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago"!

Geographical considerations pretty much ruled out touring for me.

First show: Alexandra Palace Sept 11 74
Last show: Wembley Arena Oct 31 90

and a handful of the 1981 shows at the Rainbow Theatre in between.

Preferred listening: 71-75 plus or minus 3 years or so, and the Hornsby era.

Last show 1987 or 89 I think Meadowlands

Saw about 35 shows in North east from 79 - 85 then tapered off and only saw about 5 from 85 - 89 (or 87)

Not sure what my favorite era is but love really tend toward 68-76

great question, I had been thinking about a similar one a while back...

saw 3!! shows: 4-26-72 (100 year hall)
5-18-72
1-18-78 (one and only show in US)Jerry's voice in a very weak shape

fav.years: 77,72,76,78 (I still try to get deep into 68!!!) when I first heard them, interestingly enough I just listened to 7-9-95!!!!! I know, many of you wouldn't, I did because I had that show for emotional reasons for a long time and just got the lossless version - and I say I DO love SMR a lot, always did, also Black Muddy River, but more interesting for me, I really didn't think the whole show was THAT bad as many feel, some nice little solos here and there, but mainly Jerry's voice is often just painful to listen to, it felt like it was just sad. And again - I said it before, there are amazing, awesome and soul touching JGB shows in those last years incl. 95, we discussed that before and still it's hard to understand for me - THAT difference. Sorry for the long answer, be all well.

Listen: haven't really settled into a preference as I just began listening again recently; inclined toward '73-ish lately but listen to lots of things; one big problem with the early era is the lack of Althea.

"Well, what a nice series of replies to log on to and read! Everyone from Ashes to Rich to CLIFF to our kid, GB (you really are a kid, GB! Younger than my youngest! Jeeezzzz! In a very good way I note this--you are wise beyond your yrs judging from your posts).

Would love to hear from LiA, DMax, Arb, Tiger and Strat, to name a few old friends...but, perhaps in a day or two. I hope folks won't mind a "bump" on the next slow day to let folks that are too busy with the closing ceremonies to have a chance to reply...? Thanks in advance for that...

And thanks as well to one and all for your amazing tolerance of my touchy feely approach around here; I know it can shift at any time for some unknown reason, BUT days like today, and the past few prove to me that the Forum can be a wonderful place, full of Facebook chit-chat interspersed with excellent discussions and tidbits on the DEAD...at least it's seemed to me to be rolling along quite well of late. Thanks to each of you for helping it work as well as it does, when it does.

And Ashes--so nice to have you back for as long as you can grace us with your presence; always a pleasure.

In terms of the data, no real statistical analysis, but we certainly span the range of tour dates, with the expected majority attending in the 80s and 90s, and in spite of that, still a great deal of love shown for the earlier era (65-77), so perhaps we are a more uniform bunch in that regard than the reviewers, eg. Dunno.

Thanks again...."

First: 7/8/90
Last: 7/9/95

Saw 25 shows from 90-95 (in college from 89-93).
Saw at least a couple every year except '94.

Top five (not in order): 7/8/90, 9/8/90, 3/20/91, 6/22/91, 9/4/91
Honorable mention: 6/8/92 (for being a good '92 show)

Oh, and as for my listening habits: I'll listen to pretty much any era depending on my mood. My preference is for 68-74. I don't listen to the late-70s as much as I used to. I enjoy '80-81 and the summer '85 sound. I listen to the 90's a fair amount too, in part because that was my time.

First show - Fox in Atlanta '77 but taken by cousins who had to "babysit" me and was young 13 year old kid freaked out by the "scene"; not sure I heard a note. So, first real show was next one - Fox in '80. That's when I got it.
Main years of touring/following - 82-89 (college undergrad 82-86); sat out spell/oversears, and then caught them last time in Charlotte in '95. Wish I hadn't.

Listening - all years w/ exceptions of 90s. Usually click on link someone recommended or TDIH or go back through bookmarked LIA post. Tend to stick with 68 through 77 for most part.

saw most of my shows 89-91.two disappointing shows in 92 were my last. Living in the Bay area there were a LOT of shows packed in those years. Seems like the band was ALWAYS playin whether it was Oakland Shoreline or Cal Expo not to mention Jerry shows. I like to think that I'm not biased just because that's the era I saw but I happen to think the band was playing very well those years.

era of preference? I like variety, I get bored listening to only one era. I happen to think the ultimate peak for the band was 72-74 ut I find great stuff all years. The years I listen to least( pretty much never )are 84-86 and 92-95. Not really sure on why everyone thinks 79 is so special either.

Here's a question I've been wondering - to those like Tell who only enjoy one era and one era only, are you the type that takes chances at restaurants or do you normally get the same thing? This is not a slam just a legitimate question I have. Some people get enchelad's EVERYTIME they eat Mexican or Sweet and Sour EVERYTIME they eat Chinese. Nothing wrong with that I just am not like that.

That's funny J! Yep, you'd probably say I fit your conception; I go to LOTS of diff places for lots of diff foods (Greek, Leban, Mex, Ital, Chin, Brit/pub, SW americano, but my fav meal of the day is Brkft, so lots and lots of heavy meat/egg/chili/chorizo Mex brkft items whenver possible).

But of the dozens and dozens of my fav restaurants, I have 3-5 items at each that I select every time.

Hmmm, that may make it sound like the answer is no, but wife says, "we haven't been here for a yr, and you're getting the same thing!"

But, I'd never say, always get the "X Y & Z at every Mex place I go to...it has to be known to me. So, for eg, I have three items that I use to distinguish whether a Mex place measures up, and I always try them the first few times to see if they pass muster, but may never order them again, and move on to the dishes I know will be good.

Complicated answer--sorry!

I dont eat Mexican or Chinese, but I do eat a alot of sushi. When I go to the sushi bar I may have a craving for some Uni, Toro, or Mirugai, but I have to see what looks good on that particular day and go with what looks best! It might be Amaebi, Ika, Kampachi, Hirame engawa, Abalone guts, Sawara during the summer...

When I'm in Hayward I get the Chicken Taco and Chile Verde Burrito combo EVERYTIME! You should too. Los Compadres........my long lost friend.

I prefer any other Asian cuisine over Chinese. Vietnamese and Thai are my favorites.

I jump around when listening to GD. Sometimes I want jams, sometimes I want to hear a Dylan song or a later era tune like Lazy River Road or Way to Go Home. I let the wind blow me. Easy Ducats.....easy.

Now if we could just squeeze in some beer chat, I'd be on cloud 11!

Listening since 1978

Tour - ONE SHOW, Vegas '95!
Listen: I'll go through the eras - when I first got into trading tapes in the 90's, it was the latest shows (esp. '89 and '90). Then, in the late 90's I was all about 68-72. Lately to tell the truth, its been all about Furthur, but I'll pop in a show from '73 (one of my fav years) '81, '89, '90. I'll admit to owning the show that I saw, but I haven't listened to it - ever. And, JOTS, every time I eat mexican, its enchilada; every time I eat Asian, its sweet and sour. Must be the mid-westerner in me.

My favorite recordings are the acoustic/electric shows from 1970 and 1980, and almost anything from spring tour 1989 through to the end of summer 1990. I never listen to anything post Brent unless I happen across a review somewhere that makes me unbearably curious.

First show 11/5/79, last 7/2/95. First full tour (east coast) spring 84. Saw over 500 shows counting JGB, and I can’t remember walking away from one I didn’t like at the time :) Today I really enjoy listening to shows that I have not heard before. Thank you Archive!

went to shows between 1982 and 1992, and did Seattle, Portland, and Shoreline in May/June '95-What a waste of time and money. Wish I never witnessed the train wreck at the end.

I mainly listen to 1968-1974. Heavier on 71 and 74.

Attended: saw shows in 86 & 87 heavy touring 88-91 92-95 scattered shows with a few runs in there.
Preferred: I really do like it all if it's good but the years I've been gravitating to lately I guess are, 70,76,81, and 89-90 Brent era.
